Gameplay generates its own meaning too, which often tells a quite different story to the linear narrative. In GTA IV, for instance, players who were asked during cutscenes to sympathise with main character Niko Bellic’s moral anguish would be flipping scores of pedestrians over their car bonnet seconds later. Translating this kind of kinetic meaning into a film is difficult.
