 Modern games, in contrast, driven by the necessities of fleshing out vast worlds, are brimming with story, or "lore". You often discover their worlds bureaucratically, through typewriters, holograms, tape recorders, books, tomes, scrolls, carrier pigeons, whatever. It’s a form of storytelling that works when it"s interactive but doesn’t when linear: it’s fun to scan alien fauna in Metroid Prime, for instance; it’s less fun to hear exposition like “the time of the Orc begins with Grogbor, The Rusty One”.
